1. Choose a high quality container

When selecting a sea container it’s a good idea to opt for a high-quality, well-maintained unit as it’s less likely to be susceptible to weather. Newer containers are typically in better condition and have stronger seals compared to older units. Also, investing in a container with a strong, weather-resistant coating or adding one yourself, will provide better protection against the elements.

2. Consider drainage

If your container will be sitting in storage for an extended period of time you need to consider the potential for water to pool around the base. Having a stagnant pool of water can lead to premature rusting and if it rises high enough, could leak through a poor door seal. It’s a good idea to check that the surrounding area has adequate drainage and perhaps consider if it’s worth having a foundational base to elevate the container off the ground. 

3. Ensure proper ventilation

Proper ventilation inside the container can help reduce humidity and prevent condensation, two things that can lead to rust and mold growth. Vent panels or ventilation kits can help with this, especially if the container will be in a wet or humid environment.

4. Maintain the container

When it comes to securing a shipping container against weather, doing a bit of routine maintenance can go a long way.  Regularly inspect the roof for signs of wear as this is the area most vulnerable to weather damage. Check for corrosion and if any is found treat the rust before the metal is more compromised. Finally, inspect the door seals for cracks and gaps, replacing them if wind or water could get in.

5. Prepare for seasonal changes

Different seasons can present various weather challenges. During winter, ensure that snow and ice are cleared from around the container to prevent additional weight and potential damage. In summer, check for signs of sun damage and ensure that ventilation is sufficient to manage heat buildup inside the container. If you’re in a hurricane or tornado risk area, secure the shipping container to the ground using ground plates and twist locks,  steel chains, or welding it to steel plates embedded in concrete.This is also a useful strategy for deterring would-be thieves.

Taking the time to think about how to lock and secure your container can go a long way to mitigating serious consequences, such as financial loss and disruption to operations.

6. Lock it up

When a shipping container locking mechanism is engaged it ensures the doors stay shut but it doesn’t secure it against theft. This is where you need to add your own security lock, ideally one that is resistant to tampering. There are disc locks and container locks designed specifically for this application, and for added security you can use a lock box, which is a metal enclosure that surrounds the lock making it more difficult for thieves to access.

7. Install a Security System

Adding a security alarm system can significantly enhance the protection of your sea container. Depending on where you’re storing it and how it’s being used, the system could incorporate motion sensor lights, door contacts, alarm sensors and security cameras. Some advanced systems can also send alerts to your smartphone, allowing you to respond quickly if an intruder is detected.

8. Use Shipping Container Security Seals

Security seals are applied to the container's entry points to help identify unauthorized access. If the seal is broken or tampered with it quickly indicates a potential security breach.
